Core 1

The purpose of this website is to provide an overview (with details) of this course for prospective and current students. If you are a current student, please use BRIGHTSPACE for due dates, updates, announcements, etc.

Core 1 is the first course in a 2 course series referred to as “The Core Curriculum”. These two classes are intended to prepare students to become active (i.e., ethical) and informed global citizens, which supports the mission statement of SUA.

Core 1 relies on classical texts – and their real-life applications in the modern context.

Core 1 is not about transmission of knowledge or the acquisition of skills. It is neither a “great books” course nor an introduction to intellectual history. It is a discussion-based seminar, which sets the tone and suggests the purpose of the rest of our undergraduate curriculum. Core 1 serves as a gateway to the greater dialogue between ideas, people and cultures that a student will experience at SUA and beyond. It also provides an initial immersion into the process of higher learning, as well as the first steps taken to answer the essential questions.
