Call for Proposals
“Asia in the World”
WCAAS 2018, 19-20 October 2018
Soka University of America, Aliso Viejo CA

The rise of Asian countries and the continued pace of globalization has brought Asia to the world.  Asian investment, migration, and cultural influences are now found in all corners of the globe, from Chinese infrastructure projects, to Southeast Asian diasporas and workers, South Asian films, and Korean or Japanese pop music or car production.  Asian countries and peoples now interact directly with Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Oceania.  The rise of Asia in the world in some way presents a challenge for traditional area studies, blurring regional lines.  In other ways, this shift presents an opportunity, seeing Asian communities in new contexts and studying new forms of interaction.

Soka University of America and the Pacific Basin Research Center are proud to announce the call for proposals for Western Conference of the Association for Asian Studies (WCAAS) 2018.  WCAAS 2018 will be held in sunny Orange County California, on 19-20 October 2018.  The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Asia in the World’.  As such, we invite proposals that focus on East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia, as well as thematic panels focusing on Asian interconnections with other world regions.  We encourage proposals across a range of academic disciplines.

Proposal types include individual papers, full panels / roundtables, and undergraduate poster sessions.
